In the wake of so much negativity and divisiveness, it’s never been more important to celebrate women’s accomplishments. At its 26th annual Women of the Year Awards, Glamour did exactly that—honoring those who have helped break the glass ceiling for the rest of us. Lena Dunham shared the story of Emily Doe, the student whose sexual assault by Brock Turner made headlines all over the world. Shonda Rhimes presented awards to the founders of the Black Lives Matter movement, calling them “patriots” and women who have “fundamentally altered the course of civil rights in America.” Nadia Murad, who escaped ISIS enslavement, spoke about her continued fight for justice. (U2 front man Bono became the first person of the opposite sex to receive an award.)

Ultimately, the event became somewhat of a tribute to Hillary Clinton, whom guests applauded for her defense of women’s reproductive rights and gender equality. “No matter how much sorrow or sadness that we feel [about the world’s suffering], we have to continue that fight,” said actress Laura Dern. “We have to grit our teeth and smile.” Here’s to standing up for women everywhere.
